In the last edition of my new article series I talked about Disney Princesses and the lessons they have taught us. The spotlight for this edition is Disney sidekicks, who may be less popular, are equally influential. While sidekicks may not draw the audience’s primary attention, each character gives the audience a greater appreciation for not only the movies, but for the roles they played in our childhoods.
In most Disney movies I’ve watched I often look over the sidekicks focusing solely on the main character(s). What I’ve only recently come to realize, though, is each of the sidekicks teaches us an important lesson, alongside the main character(s). From Hei Hei to Olaf, each sidekick has a purpose and a meaning. I’m only going to cover the most popular Disney sidekicks in this article but I encourage you to research others if I don’t include one of your favorites.
Timon and Pumbaa
Starting with a fan favorite we have Timon and Pumbaa from the Lion King. This best friend duo are not only some of the most memorable sidekicks but also some of the most influential. Timon and Pumbaa taught us the philosophy that life should be lived with “Hakuna Matata” (no worries), encouraging a carefree perspective that lets go of past mistakes and stress to embrace the present. The also taught us that friendship, acceptance, and finding joy in simplicity can overcome any challenges offering a fresh, although sometimes overly simplified, perspective on handling life’s troubles.
Genie and Abu
Some comedic relief is always necessary in the movie Aladdin that is found in the characters of Genie and Abu. Both of which taught us some very valuable reasons. Let’s start off with one of my personal favorites the Genie. Genie teaches us that true happiness and value come from authenticity, friendship, and freedom rather than material items such as wealth and power. Now for Abu, who teaches us that loyalty and true friendship are more important than personal gain and greed, displaying that despite being a mischievous, thieving monkey, he will still risk his life for his friends. As the complementary sidekicks to Aladdin, Genie and Abu highlight the underlying theme of the movie which is that true value comes from be
Lumiere and Cogsworth
Lumiere and Cogsworth although underappreciated this frenemy duo taught many lessons alongside Belle. Although not the designated leader of the household, Lumiere steps up and demonstrates how to strengthen love through encouragement, bringing “light” and warmth into other lives. Lumiere is the epitome of optimism, hospitality, and kindness, even when found in bleak circumstances. Contrastingly, Cogsworth taught the value of loyalty, structure and responsibility even when dealing with extreme pressure. Unlike the fun and charismatic leader Lumiere was, Cogsworth was strict and often anxious, yet dedicated nonetheless, showing that maintaining order is important but must be balanced with flexibility and care for others. As a pair Lumiere and Cogsworth come together to highlight the value of balancing fun with order, demonstrating that friendship can blossom despite contrasting personalities.
Olaf and Sven
Another one of my personal favorites, this famous comedic duo from Frozen, icons representing curiosity and humor. Olaf, one of my personal favorites, taught us that true love is prioritizing the needs of those you care about, stating “some people are worth melting for.” Olaf embodies positivity and courage to pursue dreams, even if they may be impossible, while reminding us to embrace joy, compassion, and “warm hugs” in life. Similarly Sven teaches us the value of unrestricted loyalty, friendship, and the importance of acting as a moral compass for our loved ones. As a pair, Olaf and Sven represent unconditional support, with Olaf providing optimism and verbal encouragement while Sven contributes silent, grounded friendship, together highlighting that true partnership requires both emotional warmth and continual reliability.
Flounder and Sebastian
These next two sidekicks act as loyal, albeit contrasting, companions of Ariel in the movie The Little Mermaid. Starting with Flounder, the best friend anyone could ever want; sometimes a little scared and clumsy Flounder teaches us the merit in unwavering loyalty, courage in the face of fear, and the importance of supporting the people closest to you. While Flounder takes up the position as Ariel’s best friend, Sebastian acts as Ariel’s protector, keeping her safe when she is unaware. Although Sebastian is not one of my personal favorites it’s important to recognize the value of the lessons he teaches us. Sebastian embodies consistent loyalty and adapting to change in order to support loved ones. He demonstrates that love means protecting someone’s safety while supporting their dreams, even if it means stepping outside of your comfort zone. Although these two sidekicks are completely different characters when put side by side they teach us that true companions prioritize your happiness over their own safety and comfort.
Pascal and Maximus
This non-verbal, comedic duo truly took the stage in the movie Tangled. Starting with the only chameleon sidekick in all Disney movies, Pascal serves as a steadfast friend, emotional support, and even a moral compass for Rapunzel throughout the film. More importantly Pascal puts up with all of Rapunzel’s crazy antics in the tower to keep herself busy, but also acts as her coach and cheerleader showing a true friend will be there for you whenever you need them. Now Max, formally known as Maximus, is the loyal horse of one of the kingdom’s guards displaying unwavering loyalty. As the movie continues, however; Max shows the importance of evolving beyond rigid rules and expectations to do what is right, showing how true strength can come from protecting others. As a non-verbal pair, these two sidekicks teach and lead through their actions rather than their words. Together they not only teach important lessons but highlight the true power of nonverbal communication and emotional intellect.
Baloo and Bagheera
While being unknown by many, Baloo is beloved by all of those lucky enough to be familiar with him. This stand alone side kick teaches us the importance of embracing a carefree lifestyle by focusing on “the bare necessities,” ultimately finding joy in simplicity, and letting go of unnecessary worries. Together, Baloo with the help of the main character Mowgli demonstrates the power of mentorship, friendship, and balancing responsibility with fun and relaxation. Next Bagheera, a key mentor figure teaching lessons to not only Mowgli but the audience too. He teaches lessons centered around responsibility, discipline, and the nature of conditionless love. As the “traditional” counterpart to the carefree Baloo, Bagheera’s character offers a balanced perspective on adulting and protection.
Mushu and Cri-Kee
These next two sidekicks grow in more ways than one, becoming unlikely friends with the whole mindset of protecting Mulan. Although a rather selfish sidekick, Mushu truly grows throughout the course of the movies, learning the importance of putting others needs over your own. Mushu teaches about selflessness and courage, evolving from a selfish, braggy character into a true guardian valuing Mulan’s safety and happiness over his own status. Mushu is consistently accompanied by Cri-Kee, who acts as Mushu’s moral compass, attempting to guide Mushu down the right path. Cri-Kee alone teaches lessons on loyalty, perseverance, and quiet steadfast guidance. Together they highlight the power of unlikely partnerships and the balance between ambition and caution.
Dug
Our favorite dog sidekick Dug, serves as a symbolic and emotional character throughout his movie. Dug from the movie Up teaches on unconditional love, loyalty, and the importance of finding joy in the present even when times are hard. Thanks to Dug’s cheery nature and positive outlook on life, Carl is guided from a life of grief and isolation back to the life he always dreamed of, a life full of adventure and connection. Dug helps emphasize the underlying theme that life is an adventure to be lived daily. Teaching that it’s never too late for new experiences, relationships, and love, even while honoring the past.
Hei Hei and Pua
Due to these next two sidekick’s comical nature they are adored by people of all ages. Starting with everyone’s favorite, slightly accident-prone rooster, Hei Hei emphasizes value and purpose can grow in unexpected places, proving over the course of the movies that even the most incompetent-seeming individuals can play a key role. Similarly, Pua teaches the value of loyalty and companionship. Despite being afraid of the ocean, he willingly faces his fears for her, demonstrating true friendship and heart. Together they highlight that true leadership requires compassion and patience as well as the ability to care for those more vulnerable than yourself.
Meeko and Flit
This last sidekick duo are the loyal, however often chaotic, forest companions of Pocahontas. Firstly is Meeko who is particularly food obsessed, represents curiosity and acts as a loyal and resourceful companion. Helping build the bridge between John Smith and Pocahontas, allowing her to see the settlers as human rather than solely dangerous. The second sidekick in this duo is Flit, a protective hummingbird, who is a small, but brave companion. Flit touches on the importance of protecting loved ones and overcoming initial prejudice against strangers. Although, Flit was initially stubborn and hostile towards the settlers, he learns to look past his initial judgement and distrust to embrace new friendships for the sake of peace. Together this duo represents a balance of opposition, teaching lessons on friendship and open-mindedness. Although they often clash, in the end they work together to protect and support Pocahontas.
For me this article allowed me to gain a better understanding of, not only the lessons taught by sidekicks, but the importance and influence of sidekicks in general. These sidekicks are each unique and influential both individually and when in a pair. Unfortunately I couldn’t include all the sidekicks in this article so I encourage you to go and learn about any others that may interest you!
