Leaves begin to fall and so do the missed catches. The weather starts cooling down just as the crowds are warming up. The season of fall is coming, but so are the amped up bleachers, cold nights, and touchdowns. With the start of school, the start of football season begins.
Legacy Football – what is known about it? Are we known for being the best? The best of the best? Or are we known as one of the lesser teams? The teams other schools don’t have to worry; barely breaking a sweat when their halls hear, “We are playing against Legacy tonight,” in their recent loss to Fairview with a loss of 7-34. Is this how we wanted to start off our season? Let me answer that for you: no, we didn’t. But this quote from Coach Harp seems to lighten the load of losing so early on: . “Not how you start — it’s how you finish.”
Asking the coaches of both JV and varsity; Miller, Harp, and Rider. They have answer some questions of mine that will determine their thoughts about this year’s season along with some remaining questions from previous seasons.
Watching a football game is intense, it’s grabbing. We sometimes feel like we are on the field; however, only as the players. The coaches have their favorite or best defensive plays, such as Against The Pass. However, when it comes to overall improvement, the main focus would be stopping the run, meaning stopping the offense players, which is one of the bigger things we need to do. If not stopped, then a touchdown will be made.
Offensive plays depend on what the other team is running and in that term they can take advantage of their weaknesses, which is gathered from watching the past films of their opponents on Sunday nights. Being on the subject of favorite plays, their favorite offensive plays would be Is defense or offense the advantage Legacy has? Well, to be frank we aren’t good at either, but to keep your hopes up, we are continuously improving.
Why do we have so many running plays? Throwing plays as seen are a rare occurrence because, “When you pass – Three things can happen, two are bad.” There could be interferences and drops that could possibly cost the game, especially at high school levels.
Debating about going to a football game? Well, if you are tired of losing you should go. Crowds at football games can improve their plays and their spirit to keep going. Crowds are everything in the game. Our rival might be seen as Broomfield, but that is only partially right, Horizon is also a contender.
Addressing the question that they could go pro, is a slim chance. There are people who have the potential to go pro but slim chances. The cons to losing isn’t just the points and bearing the walk of shame out of the bleachers. But, football sets the tone for the school year, and winning would boost the school spirit. Legacy High School is undefeated in the league for the last two years, and perhaps that should be a conversation rather than claiming we suck at sports. Legacy has been in the upper league for the past 4 years, while this is the first year in 4 years that Broomfield was good enough to play us.
Student athletes or athlete student? Coach Harps says afternoon practices are better for us to be student athletes. “Academics come first, we do not want players to be tired going into school.”
There has been a certain trend going on. First, a small group of freshmen, then a bigger group. This trend is said to be an aftereffect of COVID because more freshmen are coming out of their shell after being in lockdown for so long. In fact, the biggest group of freshmen plays football this year―the biggest group in three years.
The question whether JV or varsity is better may seem like a silly question. However, JV runs the opponents plays in practice. Meaning, JV is making varsity better by making the JV players be the opponents and running their plays to better our varsity team.
Cuts – often thought to be part of every sport. However, football is a non-cut program. In fact, some JV players are moved up to varsity, even if you claim or say you aren’t good at football or haven’t played it. The coaches say if you can handle the grind of the season you are a part of the team. “No cut program, we take anybody and everybody.”
At the end of the week they watch the films of players, determining what to work on, who to move up, etc. The talk of favoritism is a hard topic to explain, but to put it simply, there is never any favoritism of players. However, grading out the films every Saturday does separate the better players. It is NOT subjective and simply based on their grading performance.
Overall, Legacy is a good school and our sports are not the only highlight. There are things we can improve on, but so can the other schools. Let’s continue to cheer on our football team at this Friday’s hoco football game.
Lets go Boltz!
