As the sophomores are wrapping up Scythe by Neal Shusterman in their English classes, they are being left surprised by the plot twists—for me, it was especially Volta’s death that had me sitting with my heart aching and my jaw wide open.
Here is a poem I wrote about Rowan and Volta—it can be read in three different ways: Rowan’s side alone, Volta’s side alone, and then both of them together like one big poem. Some of the lines, you’ll notice, are taken from Volta and Rowan’s final interaction.
