Since their first win in 2006, the Legacy Lightning Marching Band has won the 5A State Champion title 11 times. Their most recent state title is from 2021, with their show Icarus: Set Free. The incredible visuals, music, and general effects ensured this beautiful show won the 5A state title. Since then, they have done Industrial Revolution for the 2022 season, and AI: Unplugged for the 2023 season, which both got 2nd place at the 5A state championships. The band took Industrial Revolution to the 2022 Marching Band Grand Nationals in Indianapolis. This year, the band hopes to win their 12th state title.
This year’s show is titled Element, and each movement has its own element expressed through music and visuals, starting with their pre show, which represents wind, then the three movements are titled Fire, Water, and Earth.
At the Big Cat Marching Festival on October 5, Legacy won first place in the preliminary round. Their biggest competitor, Fossil Ridge High School, was not far behind them at just 0.25 points – though Fossil would’ve won with their raw score since they sustained penalty losses. The band only performed in prelims due to our homecoming, but historically the band does better at finals than in prelims. This past week, on October 14, the band competed at the Colorado Bandmasters Association (CBA) 5A North Regional competition. They came in second place, close behind Fossil Ridge with a very small point difference. But regionals is not state; historically, our band has gotten second place throughout the season before they win their state title. For example, in 2021 Legacy consistently got second place until the state competition where they scored first in both prelims and finals.
The competition, Fossil Ridge, generally starts out the season very strong, getting a more or less consistent score; our band tends to build their score throughout the season. Band members still feel pretty confident about their chances to win. But breaking down the score differences between first and second place this past Monday, Legacy has a good chance of winning state this year. But however they place at state, the band will put on an amazing show. Good luck guys! 🙂
